On 8th December 2016 Consul Rowicki met the Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Carl Austin-Behan to thank him for the continuous fruitful cooperation with the city authorities and discuss details of future events Consulate General of the Republic of Poland would like to hold across the whole of its consular district including Manchester.

Another crucial point on the agenda was the situation of the large Polish community living in Manchester and neighbouring areas following the referendum and Britain’s vote to leave the European Union. Considering ways of preventing hate crime and promoting more open-minded attitudes, Consul Rowicki and Mayor Austin-Behan agreed that improvement may be achieved primarily by means of consistent large-scale social campaigns. As noted at the meeting, certain initiatives are already being implemented and other will soon begin. Consul Rowicki provided here the example of Poland’s efforts to support the #BetterThanThat campaign launched in the British Parliament at the beginning of December 2016, while Mayor Carl Austin-Behan announced initiating “Let’s End Hate Crime” campaign in Manchester in February 2017.
